On the slopes of Mt. Elgon, 6,691 coffee producers from the native
Bugisu tribe formed the Gumutindo co-operative. Here coffee is
grown in a garden-like environment where most of the producers
reside on small plots of land. The Bugisu farmers proudly named
their co-operative “Gumutindo” - which means “good coffee” in
their Lugisu language - to reflect their craftmanship. Mount Elgon
is one of the highest mountains in east Africa and our coffee comes
from altitudes ranging from 3,200 to 6,300 feet above sea level.
High altitude allows the coffee cherries to slowly mature, which
produces a sweet and unique flavor profile.
The environmental conditions to grow coffee are ideal on Mount
Elgon, but the co-op struggled to reach the international coffee
market. The members lacked the business and technical trainings
necessary to run an efficient co-op, but they’ve worked hard
to overcome these challenges over the last several years. Equal
Exchange started buying their coffee in 2007 and has supported
the co-op to train and build capacity within the membership by
awarding them a $14,000 grant. And as we say, “the proof is in the
cup” – this year’s crop presents a delicious, multi-dimensional coffee.
